YOUNG ARTIST 2012/2013
It is with great fondness that I reflect on my time with Ash Lawn Opera. I spent two wonderful summers as a Young Artist in Charlottesville with great colleagues and made lasting friendships while I was there. In fact, I performed L'elisir D'amore in St. Petersburg, FL with fellow alumna Bridgette Gan at St. Pete Opera last season! Shortly after my time at Ash Lawn, I made my debut at BAM with Ensemble for the Romantic Century in the critically acclaimed Tchaikovsky: None but the Lonely Heart. In 2015, I began a residency with American Opera Projects Composer's and the Voice Symposium. In this program, a group of ten composers/librettists and six resident singers meet monthly to premiere and workshop brand new compositions written specifically for the voices of the resident ensemble. The end of the cycle culminates in a concert of six fleshed out scenes premiered at the South Oxford Space, home of American Opera Projects in Brooklyn, and at the National Opera Center in New York City. I'm happy to be participating in this season's cycle as well. I've also had the privilege of performing Liebeslieder Walzer with New York City Ballet for eight performances at the Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center and most recently, I was seen with LoftOpera in the role of Iago in Rossini's Otello. The performances with LoftOpera earned me great praise from audiences and critics alike. The New York Times said, "The most convincing tenor was that of Blake Friedman as Iago, whose voice has a plummy fullness and dusky hue." While the New York Observer praised my "vast range and crisp, meaningful diction...". This season, I look forward to performances of Bach's B-Minor Mass with Choral Artists of Sarasota, joining the roster of Dallas Opera covering Florian in Der Ring des Polykrates by Korngold and portraying Irving Tashman in the New York City premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon's Morning Star with OnSite Opera.
