JOIN US IN ROME 1800
For centuries, Rome was an authoritarian papal state. In 1798, Napoleon led a French army to liberate the city, creating a Roman Republic and exiling the pope. This republic lasted only months before the King of Naples took control.
In his acclaimed opera Tosca, Giacomo Puccini sets the action on a specific date:June 17, 1800 and the following morning. Cesare Angelotti, consul of the fallen Republic, has escaped from political prison to a church in Rome where his fellow republican, the noble born artist Mario Cavaradossi, is painting Mary Magdalene. Cavaradossi's paramour, Floria Tosca, is the leading singer in Rome. But in pursuit of Angelotti? The notoriously evil Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia - who lusts after the beautiful but jealous Tosca.
Will Scarpia succeed? Will Tosca and Cavaradossi escape? All is answered in Charlottesville Opera's production this summer at The Paramount Theater on July 14 and 16.
