American conductor Tyson Deaton is known for his broad repertoire and versatility, earning acclaim for energetic, inventive performances. He made his debut with San Francisco Opera in Sweeney Todd, followed by L’elisir d’amore at Opera Birmingham. As a guest conductor and continuo player, he led Le Nozze di Figaro at The Janiec Opera Company and later at Kentucky Opera in 2020. He also led Houston Grand Opera’s workshops for The Snowy Day (Thompson).
Deaton’s spectrum of engagements have include Hal Prince's Candide with New York City Opera, and the major bel canto pinnacles Lucia di Lammermoor, Norma, and Guillaume Tell in the same season. He has performed with numerous companies, including North Carolina Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Sarasota Opera, and Edmonton Opera, among others.
In addition to his operatic work, Deaton is passionate about contemporary works, having conducted A Wrinkle in Time (Larsen), Little Women (Adamo), The Falling and the Rising (Redler), The Tibetan Book of the Dead (Gordon), and Eurydice (Aucoin), along with assisting in the development and performance of over 117 works.
His conducting debut was with Fort Worth Opera’s inaugural Opera Unbound series with Tom Cipullo’s Glory Denied. He led the premiere recording of this work, acclaimed by The Washington Post and OperaNews. He has also recorded L’île de Tulipatan (Albany) Offenbach and In Jest with Julia Kogan, (First Hand Records-UK).
In concert, Deaton has conducted with groups like the Louisville Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony, and Alabama Symphony, and has performed as a partner with artists such as Denyce Graves, Michael Norsworthy, Judith Kellock, Matthew Worth, Giuseppe Filianoti, Sherrill Milnes, and many others. He collaborated with Steven LaBrie and the Jessica Lang Dance Company on a staged version of Die schöne Müllerin, which received acclaim from the New York Times. Deaton has also performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, including a recital for Benjamin Britten’s centenary.
A respected clinician and panelist, Deaton frequently teaches masterclasses and lectures on opera and collaborative literature. He has contributed to publications such as The NYSTA Journal and Opera America’s ArtistLink. Deaton is also a published scholar, with an edition of the vocal works of Joseph Bologne de Saint-George. He has taught at the University of the Pacific, Lawrence Conservatory, and McGill University, and has been a guest at Yale, Rice, and Carnegie Mellon.
The singers he has worked with perform at prestigious venues including The Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, San Francisco Opera, and La Scala, among others. In 2025, Deaton will make his Phoenix Symphony debut conducting Handel’s Messiah.
